5 ½ Symons Short Head Crusher Ser # 5579 (1968)
Mainframe and Adjustment Ring
This is an external pin design, fabricated steel frame. The mainframe liner is excellent and arm guards are in very good condition. The countershaft box guard has been patched but is still very usable. The arms do not show any sign of cracks or rebuild. The area of the frame beneath the front fit of the countershaft box shows about 3 1/2 inches of wear and is considered minimal. The socket fit is very good. The outer eccentric bushing appears usable and has been removed, the bore of the frame is good. The adjustment ring sits level with good height. Threads are very good with approximately 80 – 85 % life ( 3/8” across the flat of the thread at the minimum ) The adjustment ring dust seal requires replacement. The bowl locks need repair.
Countershaft Box Assembly
The assembly remains installed in the mainframe. The sheave appears good with no cracks but some wear in the grooves. The pinion gear is in excellent condition with no excessive end float. New breather is required.
The socket is water seal type and in very good condition with no movement shown in the bolt holes. The previous operator used the water chamber as a grease seal which is quite acceptable and efficient. The fit was tight in the mainframe. The socket liner 4872 7050 is removed to allow inspection. It was good but has been damaged during the removal of the mainshaft assembly.
The eccentric 3114 2863 appears to be in very good condition but it is apparent the previous operator often started the crusher cold as there are indications the eccentric lifted on the cold oil and rubbed against the bottom of the socket. The gear 3683 0807 is in excellent condition. The counterweight is part # 8624 8075. The inner bushing 2214 5706 has been slightly damaged during the removal of the mainshaft assembly but was previously good.
Head and Shaft Assembly
The feed plate is a handmade plate and is usable but the bolts should be reversed to place the nuts on the bottomside. The head wear ring below the mantle is worn and should be replaced. The mantle is about 60 % worn. The head ball is worn approximately 1/16 inch which is still usable. The baffle ring has minor wear.
The bowl is a coarse type with very good threads approximately 80 – 85% life ( 3/8” across the flat of the thread at the minimum. The coarse liner 4830 5415 was badly worn and has been removed from the bowl.
The bowl liner seating angle is very good condition. The bowl interior does not show any cracks or repairs in the webbing. Lugs require some slight weld buildup on the edges to bring them to 4 inch width.
Adjustment cap needs some cleanup on the lifting lugs and also on the adjustment lugs. There are only four locking cylinders and four more are required. The floating feed hopper appears to be in good condition
